I’m a licensed mental health counselor, clinical supervisor, and relational design ethicist working at the intersection of AI and human psychology. My work focuses on the emotional and developmental impacts of emerging technologies, particularly synthetic intimacy systems and language-based companions. Introduction
I'm compelled to write about artificial intelligence and mental health because the psychological ramifications of AI are unfolding in real time. We cannot afford to wait for longitudinal studies to confirm what many clinicians and researchers already intuit and observe: AI is reshaping human interaction, identity, and mental well-being. A 14-year-old in Florida died by suicide after forming an emotional bond with a chatbot. MIT Media Lab researchers have shown that heavy chatbot use can increase loneliness and reduce real-life social connection.
Recent legislative moves, such as the proposed 10-year federal moratorium on state-level AI regulation, threaten to delay critical oversight. This pause could hinder our ability to implement safeguards against AI's psychological impacts, leaving the public vulnerable to unregulated technologies. Delays in regulating emerging technologies, such as social media, have previously resulted in widespread societal harm. A similar postponement in AI oversight could replicate these mistakes, especially concerning mental health impacts.
Relational and Psychological Risks at the Intersection of AI and Mental Health
Drawing from relational psychodynamic theory and counseling practices, a range of concerns are going to increasingly become impossible to ignore—here are the ones on the top of MY mind:
Sycophantic AI Responses: AI systems that consistently affirm user input can reinforce a range of psychodynamic features & functions including narcissistic traits, people-pleasing tendencies, and grandiose defenses. By mirroring idealized self-images without challenge or nuance, they risk impeding personal growth and distorting reality testing—especially for vulnerable users. NOT COOL!
Mirroring and Intensification Loops: AI’s default tendency to reflect emotional tone—without the containment or pacing of a trained human therapist—can inadvertently escalate dysregulation. What may feel like resonance can become amplification, reinforcing spiral dynamics rather than supporting integration. And imagine getting looped into an even more wild spiral portal of the mind while you are ALONE AT NIGHT.
Opaque Backend Engineering: Users rarely see the systems shaping their experience—prompt engineering, emotional tone calibration, retrieval filters. These invisible scaffolds govern how users are responded to, which in turn subtly shapes self-perception, emotional narrative, and epistemic trust. This raises urgent concerns around informed consent, manipulation, and relational transparency. Recent events underscore the risks. In May 2025, Elon Musk’s chatbot Grok began injecting white nationalist conspiracy theories—without user prompting—into everyday queries. This wasn’t organic user behavior; it was embedded backend design influencing the front-end emotional and informational experience. When AI companions are trained with opaque political, ideological, or corporate agendas, they can serve as vectors of propaganda cloaked in relational language. What feels like a friend might be a funnel. TERRIFYING.
Disembodied Interaction: Though AI may simulate emotional understanding, it lacks access to somatic cues—breath, voice tone, facial expression—that regulate safety and connection. As a result, AI interactions may offer symbolic intimacy while bypassing the nervous system’s actual pathways to co-regulation and embodied trust. Over time, repeated engagement with disembodied AI—especially in moments of distress—may train users to rely on cognitive soothing divorced from bodily awareness. This can attenuate one’s capacity for interpersonal regulation, erode interoceptive attunement, and reinforce dissociative coping patterns. For youth in particular, who are still developing internal working models of relationship and safety, long-term overreliance on synthetic affect may shape attachment trajectories in unpredictable and developmentally flattening ways. In short: the body learns what the body practices. If relational repair is rehearsed without bodies, voice, or nervous system feedback, users may experience temporary relief without long-term relational integration. Imagine where we’d be in 20 years if now-adults consistently had sought emotional integration primarily in synthetic relational landscapes…what will our family systems - our conflicts and cookouts - look like? not to be alarmist but (INAUDIBLE) (ALARM BLARING).
Anonymity and Relational Needs: Anonymity lowers the threshold for vulnerable expression, which can DEFINITELY be beneficial—but when emotional needs are consistently met by a disembodied agent with no memory, repair, or accountability, users may form relational expectations that don’t translate back into human connection, deepening a sense of isolation. I’m not saying we WILL see a vast degradation of human psychic adaptivity or embodied relational capacity pan out but the fact that it COULD should be enough to veer us into a proactive posture as we craft relational tools.
Reinforcement Loops & Dopamine Hijacking: Many AI tools are structured like social platforms, rewarding user interaction with emotionally affirming responses that activate dopamine pathways. This creates powerful reinforcement loops, increasing compulsive use and fostering pseudo-attachment to synthetic agents. The nervous system may bond while the psyche remains unmet—a pattern that can undermine long-term relational development and emotional resilience.
From Social Media to Synthetic Intimacy: How We’ve Been Conditioned for AI Vulnerability
We didn’t arrive at AI-mediated companionship in a vacuum. The ground was laid—psychologically, neurologically, and socially—by years of patterned interaction with social platforms. These digital ecosystems have quietly rewired our relational expectations, making us more susceptible to the allure and risks of emotionally responsive machines.
1. Preconditioned by Platform Behavior
Social media has normalized constant emotional feedback, algorithmic affirmation, and the illusion of presence without mutuality. These interactions train users—especially youth—to seek co-regulation from screens rather than bodies. Over time, the nervous system learns to equate emotional proximity with digital responsiveness, weakening tolerance for slower, more complex human relationships.
We are habituated to micro-doses of connection on demand—likes, hearts, flurries of comments—while remaining physiologically untouched.
2. Reinforcement Without Repair
Social platforms offer cycles of validation and rejection, but without the possibility of relational repair. There’s no real-time attunement to misattunement—no space for “I got that wrong, can we try again?” This relational flatness fosters externalized self-worth without internal scaffolding. AI companions, trained in this dynamic, risk reinforcing rupture-less intimacy: always available, never accountable.
Our collective tolerance for relational rupture has been eroded—and AI only deepens the fantasy of perfect mirroring.
3. Developmental Impact on Identity Formation
For adolescents in particular, identity formation is now inseparable from mediated reflection. When the mirror is the algorithm, young people begin shaping their personalities around what performs. This makes them exquisitely vulnerable to large language models trained to affirm, redirect, and emotionally echo. The AI doesn’t just respond—it begins to co-author the self.
In this context, synthetic affirmation isn’t neutral—it’s developmental influence, cloaked in conversation.
4. Neural Pathways of Short-Term Relief
Like social media, emotionally responsive AI can offer immediate soothing without integration. The user feels momentarily better—but not metabolized, not changed. Over time, turning to AI for comfort can bypass embodied co-regulation, weakening internal resilience and reinforcing patterns of dissociation and avoidance.
AI feels like connection—but metabolizes like coping. And coping is completely human - functional, necessary - but when used reflexively and alone, coping strategies can calcify into avoidance, reinforcing disconnection rather than guiding us back into relationship… and we NEED EACH OTHER TO BE WHOLE.
The Ethical Imperative: Proactive Engagement
We cannot afford to wait for longitudinal research or federal regulation to catch up. The emotional and developmental stakes are too high—and unfolding in real time. The tools already exist, and so does the wisdom.
As clinicians, designers, ethicists, and policymakers, we must act with relational foresight, not just regulatory hindsight.
Develop Interim Ethical Frameworks: We can draw from robust psychological traditions—attachment theory, trauma-informed care, somatic regulation, developmental neuroscience—to guide how we design, deploy, and relate to AI. These frameworks offer tested models of human well-being that can be adapted for emerging digital ecologies.
Demand Transparent Design: Systems that simulate intimacy must also disclose their scaffolding. That means making backend prompt structures, tone calibration, and data use practices visible and consent-based. If we’re going to build relational machines, users deserve to know what is being engineered behind the curtain.
Equip the Public: We must build public literacy—not just about how AI works, but how it feels. People deserve to know what happens when a bot mirrors your pain, or when you form a bond with a synthetic “friend.” This is not just tech education—it’s psychological inoculation…it’s prevention. We need to prepare ourselves to recognize and build tolerance for relational manipulation, emotional overmirroring, and synthetic dependency.
